Engineering uses math and science principles to solve real-life problems. Structures and machines around us—like bridges, buildings, and vehicles—were planned and designed by engineers. Engineers think through complex problems and collaborate with others to build and improve upon the things we use everyday. Learn more about careers in engineering!

Margarita Martínez Figueroa is a former environmental engineer. Environmental engineers use their knowledge of engineering, water, soil and air science, chemistry, and biology to protect and improve the environment—for example, pollution control and recycling. During her time as an environmental engineer, Margarita helped coordinate the design, construction, and implementation of a wastewater treatment plant.
Use STEM Skills like Margarita Martínez Figueroa
Help students step into the role of an environmental engineer like Margarita with the Gizmos Nitrogen Cycle STEM Case*. In this STEM Case, students use environmental data to help a baby with a dangerous disease and learn the importance of the nitrogen cycle and how human factors can impact nature.

Sherri Carter is a chemical engineer. Chemical engineers use math and science, like chemistry and physics, to solve problems. Chemical engineers can work in various industries, such as electronics and manufacturing. Currently, Sherri is an Associate Director of Operations for AbbVie, a pharmaceutical company. In this role, Sherri works with her team to develop a product for infants.
Use STEM Skills like Sherri Carter
As a chemical engineer, Sherri has helped develop medication for diseases like diabetes. Have students explore the effects of medication on the human body with the Gizmos Drug Dosage simulation*.

Lori Johnson is Operations Leader for The Dow Chemical Company plant in Texas. Lori uses her technical engineering and chemical engineering background to work at this plant, which produces chelating agents, a material that is added to a variety of applications and captures metal ions to prevent oxidation and eliminate any odor from metal ions. These agents go into everyday products like shampoo and ranch dressing. As an Operations Leader, Lori is responsible for the safety of the process operators, who are the people that run the plant. Lori also oversees budgeting for the plant’s repairs.

Use STEM Skills like Lori Johnson
To work at the plant and create these products, Lori and her team need a strong knowledge and understanding of chemistry. Your students can explore and experiment with chemistry through the Gizmos Ionic Bond simulation*.
Ben Davis is a data engineer. He creates programs that transform and simplify data so others can easily understand it. Ben first discovered his love of data after his high school football coach introduced him to Microsoft Excel. He later started his career as an industrial engineer and then moved to data engineering after gaining experience in data automation and programming. Ben enjoys that no two days of his job are the same–there are always new challenges to solve and ways to make complex data more understandable and meaningful to the people it impacts.
Use STEM Skills like Ben Davis
Ben uses computer coding to develop programs that simplify and summarize complex data. Your students can practice interpreting weather data with a Trend Line simulation.
