Engineering uses math and science principles to solve real-life problems. Structures and machines around us—like bridges, buildings, and vehicles—were planned and designed by engineers. Engineers use problem-solving skills to build and improve upon the things we use everyday. Learn more about careers in engineering!

Margarita Martínez Figueroa is a former environmental engineer. Environmental engineers use their knowledge of engineering, water, soil and air science, chemistry, and biology to protect and improve the environment—for example, pollution control and recycling. During her time as an environmental engineer, Margarita helped coordinate the design, construction, and implementation of a wastewater treatment plant.
Use STEM Skills like Margarita Martínez Figueroa
Environmental engineers, like Margarita, try to find solutions to environmental issues. Recently, scientists and environmentalists have feared that the increase in carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases will cause widespread problems associated with global warming. Have students measure the flow of heat into and out of Earth’s atmosphere over time as the amounts of greenhouse gases are varied with Gizmos Greenhouse Effect simulation*.

Sherri Carter is a chemical engineer. Chemical engineers use math and science, like chemistry and physics, to solve problems. Chemical engineers can work in various industries, such as electronics and manufacturing. Currently, Sherri is an Associate Director of Operations for AbbVie, a pharmaceutical company. In this role, Sherri works with her team to develop a product for infants.
Use STEM Skills like Sherri Carter
Chemical engineers use their knowledge of chemistry to develop products, like medicine. Have your students study chemistry foundations with our Gizmos Chemical Changes simulation*.

Lori Johnson is Operations Leader for The Dow Chemical Company plant in Texas. Lori uses her technical engineering and chemical engineering background to work at this plant, which produces chelating agents, a material that is added to a variety of applications and captures metal ions to prevent oxidation and eliminate any odor from metal ions. These agents go into everyday products like shampoo and ranch dressing. As an Operations Leader, Lori is responsible for the safety of the process operators, who are the people that run the plant. Lori also oversees budgeting for the plant’s repairs.
Use STEM Skills like Lori Johnson
To work at the plant and create these products, Lori and her team need a strong knowledge and understanding of chemistry. Your students can explore and experiment with chemistry through the Gizmos Ionic Bond simulation*.

Grant Davis works in the field of Civil Engineering. Civil Engineers use math and science to create environments that help people where they live and work. This career includes many specialties, including architectural, construction, structural, and geomatics engineering. As a researcher, Grant performs hands-on testing to gather data, including building, breaking, testing, and repeating for more information. That pushes the boundaries of what is known in a start-to-finish process.
Use STEM Skills like Grant Davis
Civil engineers, like Grant, work to make the world safe, practical, and efficient. They look at a wide range of issues, such as how to design a flight of stairs to how we get our drinking water. Your students can explore the role of a civil engineer to investigate how a water treatment plant has failed to eliminate all the contaminants in the water and design a new method through the Water Contamination STEM Case.

Ben Davis is a data engineer. He creates programs that transform and simplify data so others can easily understand it. Ben first discovered his love of data after his high school football coach introduced him to Microsoft Excel. He later started his career as an industrial engineer and then moved to data engineering after gaining experience in data automation and programming. Ben enjoys that no two days of his job are the same–there are always new challenges to solve and ways to make complex data more understandable and meaningful to the people it impacts.
Use STEM Skills like Ben Davis
Ben uses coding skills to build computer systems that improve processes. Give your students an introduction to coding with the Programmable Rover simulation.
